Banish the Winter Witch and Learn What Summer Has in Store

Door County is lucky to get enough snowfall each winter to be a popular destination for outdoor activities like cross country skiing and snowshoeing, but even the most dedicated winter sports enthusiasts begin anticipating longer days and warmer temperatures once school lets out.

Ephraim, where Eagle Harbor Inn is located, has celebrated the arrival of summer with Fyr Bal for 55 years. Fyr Bal, pronounced ‘fear ball,’ is rooted in a Scandinavian tradition that calls for a bonfire to be lit to represent the burning of the “Winter Witch.” Once the “Winter Witch” has been banished, the community happily welcomes the return of summer’s long days and warm temperatures.

Ephraim’s modern take on the ceremony includes a fun-filled day of music, dancing, crafts, and artisans. And this year, Eagle Harbor Inn is getting in on the fun by welcoming people to get their fortunes told by local mystic Gypsy Tribe. What does summer 2019 have in store for you? You’ll have to visit Eagle Harbor Inn to find out.
